"I think The Pittsburgh Promise is the best thing ever," says
Sarah, a 2008 graduate of Pittsburgh Brashear High
School. "The Pittsburgh Promise allowed me to go to the
college of my choice right out of high school." For Sarah
and her family the cost factor made the choice of a 4-year private
school prohibitive. Sarah was leaning toward attending
a community college for two years and then transferring, as
a junior, to the 4-year school of her choice, Robert Morris
University (RMU).
In early December of 2007 UPMC wonderfully pledged $100 million dollars
to The Pittsburgh Promise and the 2008 graduating class
was eligible for the first Promise Scholarships. That
announcement changed everything for Sarah. Sarah
applied and was accepted to Robert Morris University.
In June of 2009, Sarah finished her freshman year as a business
major with a 3.1 GPA. She loved her freshmen year in college—
she learned a lot from her classes, she successfully
developed new time management skills, and, as a member
of the RMU Women’s Rowing Team, met "some very cool
people."
The 33 UPMC Scholars of The Pittsburgh Promise who attended
RMU last year developed a special bond. These students became tightly knit, enabling them to
support and encourage each other throughout their first
year of college, a critical time that will set the foundation of a
student’s future. They decided to create an official student
organization called The Pittsburgh Promise Cohort. This
organization is providing incoming freshmen with mentors
that will support them socially and academically in order to
help better their college experience. As Sarah returns to RMU to start her sophomore year she is eager to help the new class of UPMC Scholars of The Pittsburgh Promise. "We are very excited
about starting this organization because we know what college
is like and we want to share these experiences with
incoming freshmen who also receive The Pittsburgh
Promise." Thank you Sarah for Keeping The Promise. |
